Shillong, May 30: Meghalaya on Saturday officially launched its preparations for the 39th National Games, signing the Host State Agreement for the 2027 edition and inaugurating a new Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall in Shillong. The twin milestones marked the beginning of the state’s journey towards hosting the country’s premier multi-sport event and highlighted its commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and athlete development.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Union Minister of State for Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla and Indian Olympic Association president P. T. Usha.

Describing the occasion as a landmark moment for the state, Conrad Sangma said hosting the National Games reflected Meghalaya’s long-term vision of emerging as a leading sporting destination and securing a prominent place on India’s sporting map. He expressed confidence that the event would attract investment, generate opportunities and provide greater exposure for athletes from the state.
Mandaviya reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure across the Northeast and nurturing young talent, noting the region’s growing contribution to Indian sports through athletes competing successfully across multiple disciplines.
A major highlight of the day was the inauguration of the new Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall, which is expected to serve as one of the key venues for the 39th National Games. The facility will also provide year-round training opportunities for athletes from Meghalaya and other northeastern states, contributing to the long-term development of sports in the region.

For Meghalaya, the signing of the Host State Agreement also signals the countdown to the 39th National Games in 2027, the largest multi-sport event ever to be hosted by the state and a significant milestone in its sporting history.
Officials at the event described the occasion as the beginning of a larger sporting journey for Meghalaya. “Today marks the beginning of a sporting ecosystem that will inspire future generations,” they said.
With the National Games now firmly on the horizon, Meghalaya’s focus will turn towards expanding infrastructure, enhancing athlete preparation and ensuring the state is ready to welcome thousands of athletes, coaches, officials and spectators from across the country in 2027.
