Shillong, Sept 1: Meghalaya finished as overall runners-up at the 13th North East Zone Shooting Championship 2026, retaining the position for a second consecutive year at the regional competition.
The Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM) contingent returned from the championship with a tally of 37 medals, comprising 13 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals.
The championship was held from August 25 to 30 at the Kahilipara Sports Shooting Range at the 4th APBn Complex in Guwahati.
Meghalaya finished behind hosts Assam, who topped the overall standings with 80 medals, including 39 gold. Manipur secured third place with 31 medals.
The runner-up finish continues Meghalaya’s consistent showing at the North East Zone championship. The state had recorded its best-ever performance at last year’s 12th edition in 2025, finishing second with 61 medals — 24 gold, 22 silver and 15 bronze.
Although Meghalaya’s medal tally was lower this year, the team maintained its position among the region’s leading shooting contingents in a field that included Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, the Assam Rifle Marksmanship Unit and the Army.
The Shooting Association of Meghalaya congratulated all athletes, coaches and support staff for the achievement and said it remains committed to strengthening shooting infrastructure and training facilities across the state as it eyes a stronger performance at the 39th National Games in 2027.
