Shillong, May 30: Langsning FC scripted one of the most memorable nights in their history on Saturday, battling back from a goal down before holding their nerve in a dramatic penalty shootout to defeat Shillong Lajong FC and book a place in their first-ever Meghalaya State League (MSL) final.
In front of another packed SSA Stadium, the two Shillong giants produced a thrilling semifinal contest worthy of the occasion. After 120 minutes of pulsating football ended 1-1, Langsning emerged victorious 4-2 in the shootout, sparking jubilant celebrations among their supporters.

Shillong Lajong looked poised to reach another final when Fridison Wanniang put them ahead in the 21st minute with a superb left-footed finish after being picked out by teammate Deibormame Tongper. The former champions controlled much of the first half and appeared to have one foot in the title clash.
However, Langsning moved their gears and upped their pace after the break. The second half belonged largely to Langsning, who pushed forward relentlessly in search of an equaliser. Chances came and went, but the pressure continued to build. Young sensation Kyrmenskhem Mukhim, one of the standout performers of MSL 5, came agonisingly close when his header was brilliantly kept out by Shillong Lajong goalkeeper Banshanskhem Kharsyntiew.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 80th minute. A long throw from Chusrang Sangma was perfectly capitalized upon by tournament top scorer Nelson Rymbai, firing home his 23rd goal of the season to level the scores and send the Langsning supporters into raptures.
With momentum swinging dramatically, both sides threw everything forward in extra time in search of a winner. Fridison remained a constant threat and almost produced a moment of magic with his pace and footwork for Lajong, but the decisive goal never came.
The contest ultimately headed to penalties, where Langsning’s composure proved the difference.
Goalkeeper Nister Roy Suting emerged as the hero of the evening, producing a crucial save to deny one of Lajong’s spot-kicks. With pressure mounting, Samchaphrang Lato then missed Lajong’s final attempt, allowing Langsning to complete a remarkable victory and secure their maiden appearance in the MSL final.
The dramatic triumph sets up a fascinating title clash on June 5 against MSL debutants Nongkseh SSCC, who defeated Rymbai Shkenshynriah SC in the first semifinal.
The final will also guarantee a new champion for MSL. With all previous title winners eliminated before the final stage, MSL 5 will crown a fifth different champion in five editions, continuing the league’s tradition of producing a new winner every season.
Saturday’s encounter was another testament to the growing stature of the Meghalaya State League, with supporters from both camps creating a vibrant atmosphere and staying until the very last kick of an unforgettable contest.
Langsning and Nongkseh now have a few days to recover and prepare for what promises to be another captivating showdown, with the coveted MSL trophy awaiting a first-time champion.
