Shillong, Sept 3: Damanbhalang Chyne struck a sensational stoppage-time free-kick as two-time champions Mawlai edged Nongkseh 1-0 in a thrilling Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2026 encounter at the SSA Stadium on Wednesday.
The match appeared destined to end goalless after both sides created several opportunities across the 90 minutes, but Mawlai captain Damanbhalang produced the decisive moment deep into added time.
With the clock showing 90’+5, Mawlai were awarded a free-kick right on the edge of the Nongkseh penalty area after a poor tackle. Damanbhalang stepped up and opted to go directly for goal, curling the ball past the defence and into the net to spark wild celebrations from the Mawlai camp.
The victory keeps Mawlai unbeaten and at the top of the SPL standings with 10 points, level with Shillong Lajong but ahead on goal difference.
Nongkseh, meanwhile, remain sixth with four points after suffering their second consecutive defeat.
Both teams had chances throughout an entertaining contest.
Mawlai came close as early as the eighth minute when Basuklang Bina’s effort went marginally wide. Two minutes later, Lovingstar Suting struck the upright, while Robertson Khongriah saw his attempt deflected away by Nongkseh defender Kynsailang Khongsit.
Nongkseh gradually grew into the game and finished the first half strongly, forcing Mawlai into some desperate defending as they tried to keep the scores level.
The pressure continued after the restart, but Nongkseh were unable to find the breakthrough.
Mawlai substitute Kevin Rymbai then came agonisingly close on two occasions. His first attempt, a powerful effort from distance, crashed against the crossbar, before he struck the woodwork again when attempting to chip Nongkseh goalkeeper Daraphun Talang.
Nongkseh also had their opportunities.
Hardy Cliff Nongbri was twice unable to capitalise. A cross from Mickyson Tangsong presented him with a good chance, but his attempt was scuffed. Later, Kitboklang Pale delivered another dangerous cross which Hardy met well, only for Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhmiki Lamare to gather the ball.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match appeared headed for a draw.
Then came the decisive moment.
A late tackle by a Nongkseh player just outside the box gave Mawlai the free-kick they needed. Daman took responsibility and went for goal himself, producing a superb finish in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The result sees Mawlai maintain their unbeaten start, while Nongkseh will have to regroup after another narrow defeat following their 1-0 loss to Shillong Lajong last week.
