Shillong, Oct 16: Newly crowned Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2026 champions Mawlai will take on Nongkseh in the first semifinal of the SSA Super Cup 2026 at the SSA Stadium on Friday, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm.
The encounter will pit two of Shillong’s strongest sides against each other as they battle for a place in the final and a chance to lift the Super Cup trophy.
Mawlai secured direct entry into the semifinals after winning the SPL title, alongside runners-up Shillong Lajong, who will face Meghalaya Police in the second semifinal on Saturday.
Nongkseh, meanwhile, finished third in their debut SPL campaign and had to negotiate the playoff round to reach the last four. They came through a challenging encounter against Sawmer on Tuesday, recovering from a deficit twice before securing a 4-2 victory.
The result highlighted Nongkseh’s resilience and the unpredictable nature of knockout football, setting the stage for another competitive contest against the league champions.
The two teams also have recent history in the SPL. Their league encounter appeared destined for a draw before Mawlai’s Damanbhalang Chyne scored a stunning free-kick in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to secure all three points. That late winner proved crucial to Mawlai’s title-winning campaign.
Nongkseh will now have an opportunity to avenge that defeat, while Mawlai will look to continue their impressive run and reinforce their status as one of Shillong’s leading teams.
With a place in the final at stake and both sides familiar with each other’s strengths, Friday’s semifinal promises to be a closely contested affair.
