Assam government honours Asian Games champion after her historic gold-medal triumph
Guwahati, October 7: Assam’s Asian Games golden girl Lovlina Borgohain received a double honour on her return home, with the state government presenting her a ₹50 lakh reward and promoting her from Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to Additional Superintendent of Police (Additional SP) in recognition of her outstanding achievement.
Borgohain, who clinched the women’s 75kg gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, was felicitated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at his office in Guwahati soon after her arrival in the state on Tuesday.
The champion boxer from Golaghat defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5–0 in the final, producing a commanding performance to claim the Asian Games title.
The victory was a landmark moment in Borgohain’s career and Indian women’s boxing. She became only the second Indian woman boxer after Mary Kom to win an Asian Games gold medal.
Now, her sporting achievement has been followed by another significant milestone in her professional life.
The Assam government has promoted Borgohain from DSP to Additional SP, recognising her contribution to the state and her achievements on the international sporting stage.
The ₹50 lakh cheque presented by the Chief Minister further underlined the state’s recognition of her Asian Games triumph.
For Assam, Borgohain’s gold was a moment of immense pride. The boxer from Golaghat has emerged as one of the state’s most recognisable sporting figures, carrying the aspirations of a generation of young athletes from Assam and the Northeast.
Her latest triumph adds to an already impressive international résumé that includes an Olympic bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 and a World Championships bronze medal.
Borgohain’s homecoming on Tuesday was marked by a rousing reception from supporters, reflecting the excitement surrounding her historic Asian Games victory.
From a young boxer from Golaghat to an Olympic medallist, World Championships medallist and now Asian Games champion, Borgohain’s journey has become one of Assam’s most inspiring sporting stories.
With the ₹50 lakh reward and her elevation from DSP to Additional SP, Assam has honoured its golden boxer not just for winning a medal, but for carrying the state’s name to the highest levels of international sport.
