TURA, Aug 29: As part of the National Sports Day celebrations, the District Sports Office, West Garo Hills, Tura, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Fit India, and the Government of Meghalaya, organized an open-category 10km Run on Saturday, drawing an enthusiastic turnout of over 200 participants.
The event, which was open to both men and women, commenced with on-the-spot registrations starting at 5:00 AM at the Matchakolgre L.P. School Field. The 10km race was flagged off by Rupam R. Marak, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Tura, from the Matchakolgre L.P. School Field, proceeding toward the Bokmagre petrol pump before making a U-turn and finishing back at the starting ground.

Addressing the gathering during the presentation ceremony, Rupam R. Marak, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Tura, highlighted the importance of sports discipline and physical fitness as a sure path to success in life. He noted that active engagement in sports plays a vital role in steering youth away from harmful habits such as tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse. Congratulating all participants, the SP (Traffic) emphasized that every runner who completed the race was a winner, while giving special recognition to the oldest and youngest runners as well as an 11-year-old girl from Dalu who achieved a remarkable third-place finish in the women’s division.
In the Men’s category, Meckmillan B Marak from Jengjal bagged the first place, clocking an impressive timing of 31.15 minutes. Sengwat S Sangma of Aminda Simsang secured second place with a time of 31.49 minutes, while Nirest R Marak of Matchakolgre finished third in 32.40 minutes. Completing the top eight positions were Sengnabirth R Marak, John Omega Sangma, Khrisdalin Basaiamoit, Chekam Marak, and Rikrak Ch Sangma.

In the Women’s category, Raksilchi A Marak from Williamnagar claimed top honors, completing the run in 42.42 minutes. Martha D Sangma, also from Williamnagar, took second place at 43.18 minutes, followed by Carnidaliana Ch Momin from Dalu in third place with a timing of 44.15 minutes. The remaining top spots were taken by Palbina A. Sangma, Disimet Sangma, Nimra G Momin, Danchi A Sangma, and Nopanchi A Sangma
