Shillong, Oct 14: Shillong will host the 5th KIO North East Zone Karate Championship 2026 from October 22 to 24, marking a significant opportunity for Meghalaya to showcase its growing presence in the sport.
Organised by the Karate India Organisation (KIO), hosted by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) and supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, the three-day championship will be held at the Convocation Hall of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.
The zonal championship is expected to bring together 899 athletes, coaches, referees and team officials from across the North East. The competition will provide karatekas, particularly young and aspiring athletes, with an opportunity to demonstrate their technical abilities, competitive spirit, discipline and sportsmanship.
The event aims to promote karate across the region, encourage sporting excellence and provide athletes with valuable experience at the zonal level. It will also offer participants an opportunity to assess their performances and prepare for higher-level competitions, including the 39th National Games, scheduled to be hosted by Meghalaya in 2027.
Meghalaya’s karatekas have earned recognition for the state through their performances at regional, national and international competitions over the years. Several leading local athletes are expected to compete in Shillong, where they will look to build on their previous achievements and make the most of competing on home ground.
With support from the local sporting community, family members and well-wishers, the championship is expected to provide a significant platform for Meghalaya’s karatekas to showcase their talent while further strengthening the state’s sporting culture.
