Shillong, July 6: East Khasi Hills emerged overall champions at the 19th Meghalaya State Swimming Championship 2026, while South West Khasi Hills finished runners-up in the two-day competition held at the Crinoline Swimming Pool in Shillong.
Organised by the Meghalaya Swimming Association (MSA), the championship was held from July 3 to 4 and attracted 133 swimmers from across the state, who competed in various age-group events.
Meiaipynsan L Tron was named the Best Swimmer in the men’s category, while Verem Gedaliah Nongsiej won the Best Swimmer award in the women’s category.
Keanan Chugim Nongrum Momin was adjudged the Most Promising Swimmer among the boys, while Anisa Rakshit Phanbuh received the corresponding award in the girls’ category.
The championship witnessed keen competition across multiple events, with swimmers producing several impressive performances during the two-day meet. Winners in the various categories were presented with gold, silver and bronze medals during the closing ceremony.
Assistant Director of the Meghalaya Sports and Youth Affairs Department, P.B. War Nongbri, attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest and congratulated the participants for their performances.
“The increasing participation in the State Swimming Championship is a clear indication that swimming is gaining momentum in Meghalaya. Such competitions are essential for identifying and nurturing talent, and I am confident that more young swimmers will be inspired by this event and go on to represent the state,” he said.
The organisers said the growing participation in the championship reflects the rising popularity of swimming in Meghalaya and the steady development of the sport across the state.
