Three schools to represent the district at the state-level championship in Shillong.
Shillong, July 5: Step By Step Secondary School, Wapung Higher Secondary School and Lotus Secondary School emerged champions in their respective categories at the District-Level Inter-School Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football Tournament 2026, earning the right to represent East Jaiñtia Hills at the state-level championship in Shillong.
Organised by the Office of the District Sports Officer (DSO), East Jaiñtia Hills, the tournament, which began on June 16, concluded on Friday at the East Jaiñtia Hills District Sports Association (EJHDSA) Football Ground in Deinchynrum.
Step By Step Secondary School lifted the Under-15 Boys title after defeating Musniang Secondary School 1-0 in the final.
In the Under-17 Boys final, Wapung Higher Secondary School edged past Sein Raij Tuber Higher Secondary School 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a closely contested match.
Lotus Secondary School clinched the Under-17 Girls title with a 2-0 victory over Khliehriat Higher Secondary School.
The closing ceremony was attended by District School Education Officer (DSEO) R. Diengdoh, District Sports Officer S.M. Rapsang, District Public Relations Officer E.S. War and other sports officials.
Addressing the gathering, Diengdoh congratulated the winners and praised all participating teams for their efforts. He said that while winning is important, participation and the experience gained through competition are equally valuable.
He also encouraged teams that missed out on the titles to continue working hard and return stronger next season. He urged students to remain disciplined, uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and become responsible members of society.
Following the finals, prizes were distributed to the winners and runners-up in all three categories. Individual awards were also presented to the Best Goalkeepers and Best Players.
Wanbanshan Lamare of Step By Step Secondary School was named Best Goalkeeper in the Under-15 Boys category, Redeemingson Phawa of Wapung Higher Secondary School received the award in the Under-17 Boys category, while Haphisuk Lyngdoh of Lotus Secondary School was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper in the Under-17 Girls category.
The Best Player awards went to Daowan Rymbai of Musniang Secondary School (Under-15 Boys), Jefferson Phawa of Wapung Higher Secondary School (Under-17 Boys) and Saphapaya Lyngdoh of Lotus Secondary School (Under-17 Girls).
