Baghmara, May 29: Efforts to promote shooting sports and identify promising talent received a boost in South Garo Hills on Friday as an awareness programme was organised at the Sports Complex in Baghmara, bringing together students, sports enthusiasts and members of the local community.
The programme was jointly organised by the Shooting Association of Meghalaya (SAM) in collaboration with the Office of the District Sports Officer, South Garo Hills, and the South Garo Hills District Shooting Sports Association (SGHDSSA).
Designed to introduce young people to the sport and highlight opportunities available at competitive levels, the event focused on the values and skills that shooting sports help develop, including discipline, concentration, patience and responsibility.
Speakers encouraged participants to view shooting not only as a competitive sport but also as a platform for personal growth and achievement. They pointed to the success of Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist, as an example of how dedication and perseverance can lead to success on the world stage.
Officials said the initiative forms part of a broader effort to expand the reach of shooting sports across Meghalaya and create pathways for talented youngsters from districts such as South Garo Hills to compete at state and national levels.
They expressed hope that increased awareness and grassroots engagement would encourage more young people to take up the sport and help uncover future shooting champions from the region.
The programme concluded with an appeal to students to actively participate in sports and adopt healthy, focused and disciplined lifestyles, both on and off the field.
