Shillong, June 27: Hasebinson Marwein and Marqueenless Ramsiej won the men’s and women’s categories respectively at the 7th Shillong 10K Run 2026, organised by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) on Saturday morning to mark the International Olympic Day.
The annual road race attracted hundreds of participants ranging from teenagers to veteran runners. International Olympic Day is celebrated every year on June 23 to commemorate the establishment of the International Olympic Committee in 1894, with 10-kilometre runs organised across the world as part of the celebrations.
Hasebinson Marwein crossed the finish line first after leading a highly competitive men’s race. Former champion Wanbok L Mawphlang, who won the event in 2024, secured second place, while Junom Phawa completed the podium in third after staying among the front-runners throughout the race.
In the women’s race, Marqueenless returned to winning ways after reclaiming the title she had last won in 2024. One of Meghalaya’s leading long-distance runners, she has consistently featured among the top finishers, having also placed third in both 2022 and 2023. Jidalin Tympuin finished runner-up this year, while Maryqueen Pale claimed third place.
Both champions received prize money of Rs 5,000 each. The runners-up were awarded Rs 3,000, while the third-place finishers took home Rs 2,000. The organisers also presented consolation prizes to athletes finishing between fourth and eighth positions. In addition, participants aged above 55 years were honoured with special tokens of appreciation in recognition of their participation.
The race was flagged off by Indian long-distance running legend Binningstar Lyngkhoi and international karate medallist Damang Syngkon, who recently assumed charge as the East Khasi Hills District Sports Officer.
The event was organised with the support of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, the East Khasi Hills district administration, the Police Department and a large team of volunteers.
Among those present were MSOA Working President John F Kharshiing and General Secretary Finely L Pariat, who encouraged participants to register for the Sohra International Half Marathon 2026, scheduled for September 4. Besides the half marathon, the event will also feature 10km and 5km races. Registration opens on July 1, with the organisers capping entries at 11,000 runners.
