Shillong, May 7: The two-day District-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026 got underway at the Williamnagar District Sports Association Stadium on Wednesday, bringing together nearly 400 young athletes from across East Garo Hills.
Organised by the District Sports Office, Williamnagar, in collaboration with the East Garo Hills District Athletic Association, the meet aims to identify promising athletes for upcoming state-level competitions.
A total of 23 schools from different parts of the district are participating in the event, including teams from Samanda, Songsak and Rongjeng blocks. Competitions are being held in the Under-14, Under-15 and Under-16 categories.

District Sports Officer and Assistant Director of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Saljagring M Marak, said the Under-14 category features three triathlon formats designed to assess the overall athletic ability of participants. The events include the 60-metre sprint, long jump, high jump and shot put.
He said athletes securing the top two positions in the district meet will qualify for the State Athletic Meet scheduled to be held in Shillong on May 19 and 20, while the screening process for selected participants will take place on May 18.

Outstanding performers at the state meet will go on to represent Meghalaya at the national-level competition.
Marak said East Garo Hills possesses considerable sporting talent and expressed confidence that with proper training and exposure, athletes from the district can compete strongly at higher levels.
