Shillong, May 6: Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School emerged overall champions at the District-Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026, which concluded at the Williamnagar District Sports Association Stadium on Thursday.
Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School finished as overall runners-up at the two-day meet, organised by the District Sports Office, Williamnagar, in collaboration with the East Garo Hills District Athletic Association.
The closing ceremony was attended by local MLA and Cabinet Minister Marcuise N. Marak as chief guest. Also present were East Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Stephen A. Rynjah, Assistant Commissioner A Koch, Williamnagar District Sports Association president Sengbath R Marak, school heads, teachers and students.
Addressing the gathering, Marak said sporting competitions help foster discipline, teamwork and unity among students while encouraging them to strive for excellence. He urged young athletes to continue training and preparing for higher-level competitions, including the upcoming National Games 2027.
He also highlighted state government initiatives such as the CM Sports Scholarship and STAR Programme aimed at supporting talented sportspersons across Meghalaya.
District Sports Officer and Assistant Director of Sports and Youth Affairs Saljagring M Marak thanked schools, officials, volunteers and medical teams for contributing to the successful conduct of the event.
Among the individual award winners, Susanichak A Sangma of Loyola Secondary School was named Best Athlete in the Under-18 Boys category, while Ritimesha N Marak of Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School won the Under-18 Girls title.
Ollambe Chigrim N Sangma of Loyola College secured the Best Athlete award in the Under-16 Boys category, while Kimkimchi Shira of KGBV claimed the Under-16 Girls title.
In the team events, Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School won both the Under-18 Boys and Girls championships. Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School clinched the titles in the Under-16 Boys and Girls categories.
