Shillong, Sept 29: Mawlai SC strengthened their challenge for the Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2026 title with a 2-0 victory over Meghalaya Police at the SSA Stadium here on Tuesday.
Arkibor Makhroh struck in the third minute before Damanbhalang Chyne (51’) doubled Mawlai’s advantage shortly after half-time, securing a result that lifted them to second place in the table.
Mawlai now have 15 points from seven matches, one behind defending champions and leaders Langsning FC. Shillong Lajong FC are third with 14 points, while Nongkseh SS&CC are fourth with 13. All four teams have two matches remaining.

For Meghalaya Police, the defeat brings an end to their hopes of winning the SPL title. They remain fifth with 10 points, but still have plenty to play for as they look to finish in the top six and secure qualification for the SSA Super Cup.
Mawlai made the ideal start, taking the lead in the third minute after a scramble inside the Meghalaya Police penalty area ended with Arkibor finding the net. The early goal allowed Mawlai to settle into their quick, attacking style, with coach Hering Shangpliang also handing opportunities to youngsters Verjelous Shylla and Lovingstar Suting.
Mawlai continued to threaten, with Jestibor Mawlong particularly active in attack. The forward came close to doubling the lead when his header was kept out by Meghalaya Police goalkeeper Basuklang Nongsiej.
Meghalaya Police had their opportunities on the counter, particularly towards the end of the first half and in the opening stages after the break, but Mawlai’s defence remained organised.
Damanbhalang came close to scoring before half-time when his free-kick from a tight angle went through the defensive wall. Basuklang reacted well to make an excellent save and Meghalaya Police managed to clear the danger.

The second goal arrived in the 51st minute. Damanbhalang worked his way into the box, went past Bikram Chettri and unleashed a powerful effort towards goal. Basuklang was unable to react in time as the ball found the back of the net.
Mawlai could have extended their lead further, with substitute Fairming Suting hitting the post in the 61st minute. Jestibor also missed a late opportunity when he headed a cross wide from a promising position.
Mawlai’s defensive record remained intact, however, as they secured another clean sheet. They have now conceded just one goal in the league this season, with goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare recording his sixth clean sheet.
The result keeps Mawlai firmly in the title race with two games remaining, while Meghalaya Police will now turn their attention to securing a top-six finish.
Rangdajied United, currently eighth, will take on bottom-placed Mylliem at 3pm on Wednesday. Mylliem must win to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive, with anything less confirming their drop to the First Division next season.
