Shillong, Sept 29: Shillong has been selected as one of the venues for the first round of the Indian Women’s League 2 (IWL 2) 2026-27, with Group C matches scheduled to be played at the SSA Stadium in Polo next month.
Jakrem SC, champions of the inaugural Meghalaya Women’s State League in 2025, will represent Meghalaya in the competition. It will be the first time that a club from the state features in the IWL 2.
No Meghalaya club has previously competed in either the IWL or IWL 2. The erstwhile Royal Wahingdoh were invited to participate in the qualifying round of the inaugural IWL in the 2016-17 season but failed to advance to the main competition after losing all four of their matches.
The introduction of the statewide Meghalaya Women’s State League by the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) last year provided a structured pathway for local clubs to qualify for national-level competitions. Jakrem’s title-winning campaign in the inaugural edition earned the club the opportunity to compete in this season’s IWL 2.
Jakrem have been drawn in Group C alongside the All India Football Federation’s TDS Academy, Kemp FC and Mumbai Knights FC.
The first round will see the four group winners and the two best second-placed teams advance to the final round, which is scheduled to begin in November.
While IWL 2 is a club-based competition, the MFA also sees the tournament as an opportunity to provide competitive exposure to Meghalaya’s women footballers ahead of the 39th National Games, which the state will host in 2027.
