Shillong, October 16: Meghalaya has taken a significant step towards strengthening its sports infrastructure with the inauguration of a High-Performance Sports Science Centre at the Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall in Shillong on Friday.
Olympic medal-winning shooter Abhinav Bindra inaugurated the centre in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, marking a new chapter in the state’s efforts to build a stronger scientific foundation for athlete development.

The centre is expected to play an important role in enhancing sports performance in Meghalaya through scientific training, performance assessment and specialised athlete support. Its establishment reflects the growing emphasis on integrating sports science into training programmes to help athletes improve their performance and prepare for high-level competitions.
The initiative assumes particular significance as Meghalaya prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027. With the state looking to strengthen its sporting ecosystem ahead of the multi-discipline event, access to sports science and high-performance support could help athletes prepare more systematically for competition.

Beyond preparations for the National Games, the centre is expected to contribute to the long-term development of sports in Meghalaya by encouraging a more scientific approach to training, athlete conditioning and performance enhancement.
Speaking on the occassion, CM Sangma said, “While we aspire medals in National and International sports for our state, the dream is much bigger than medals. We want sports to become a way of life and Meghalaya to emerge as a leading sporting destination.”
“The champions of tomorrow begin with the foundations we build today!”
The inauguration also brings a high-performance sports science facility into the state’s broader effort to improve athlete support systems and create better opportunities for local sportspersons.

As Meghalaya moves towards the 2027 National Games, strengthening sports infrastructure and scientific training will be important to its ambition of developing competitive athletes and establishing a lasting sporting legacy.
The centre marks another step in Meghalaya’s preparations for the National Games, with the focus now on translating improved facilities and sports science support into better opportunities and performances for athletes across the state.
