Shillong, Oct 16: Nongkseh produced a resolute defensive performance to defeat Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2026 champions Mawlai 1-0 in the first semifinal of the SSA Super Cup at the SSA Stadium on Friday.
Banraplang Pyngrope scored the decisive goal in the 47th minute as Nongkseh held firm against sustained pressure from Mawlai to secure their place in the final.
Nongkseh will face the winner of Saturday’s second semifinal between Shillong Lajong and Meghalaya Police, which kicks off at 5pm. SPL champions Mawlai and runners-up Lajong received direct entry to the semifinals, while Nongkseh and Meghalaya Police progressed through the playoffs.
The defeat marked Mawlai’s first loss of the 2026 season after their unbeaten run to the SPL title. They had beaten Nongkseh 1-0 when the two sides met in the league on September 2.
Mawlai created the first opportunity of Friday’s encounter in the fourth minute, but Nongkseh goalkeeper Daraphun Talang blocked an effort following a corner. At the other end, Chesterpaul Lyngdoh produced a spectacular bicycle kick on target, forcing Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare to gather the ball at the second attempt before it crossed the line.
Nongkseh grew into the contest and created several opportunities during a strong spell in the first half. Dawanchwa Challam came particularly close to opening the scoring when his effort struck the upright.
Despite the attacking exchanges, the teams went into the break goalless. The deadlock was broken shortly after the restart when Hardy Cliff Nongbri’s free-kick caused confusion inside the Mawlai penalty area, allowing Banraplang to head the ball into the net in the 47th minute.

The goal prompted Mawlai to intensify their search for an equaliser. Nongkseh responded by retreating into a compact defensive shape, with almost all their outfield players working to protect their advantage.
Mawlai moved the ball well and created openings but struggled to produce the finishing touch. One of their best chances came in the 78th minute when Jestibor Mawlong skilfully dribbled past several defenders and entered the penalty area. With only Daraphun to beat, however, he sent his effort high over the crossbar.
Basuklang Bina had two further opportunities during seven minutes of stoppage time. Daraphun denied his first attempt, while his second effort sailed over the bar as Nongkseh continued to withstand the pressure.
The victory represented a significant improvement for Nongkseh following their hard-fought 4-2 playoff win over Sawmer, in which they had twice fallen behind before recovering to advance.
Banraplang was named the T7 Player of the Match for his winning goal and defensive contribution. He received the award from Donald P. Wahlang, former SSA vice-president and retired Meghalaya Chief Secretary.
Nongkseh will now await their opponents for the final as they look to cap their impressive Super Cup campaign with the trophy.
