Aichi-Nagoya: Assam’s star boxer Lovlina Borgohain has once again carried the Northeast’s fighting spirit onto the biggest continental stage, powering into the women’s 75kg final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Lovlina edged past Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in a closely fought 3–2 split decision at the Nishio Gymnasium on Wednesday, securing her place in the gold-medal bout.
The victory takes Lovlina to her second consecutive Asian Games final, making her the first Indian woman boxer to reach back-to-back Asian Games finals.
For Assam and the Northeast, the moment carries special significance. From the boxing rings of Barpathar in Golaghat district to the Olympic podium and now another Asian Games final, Lovlina’s journey continues to put Assam firmly on the international boxing map.
The semifinal was a battle of patience and composure. Bogdanova took the opening round on three judges’ cards, but Lovlina responded strongly in the second, winning it unanimously on all five cards. The final round was closely contested, with Lovlina doing enough to convince three judges and seal the victory.
The win guarantees Lovlina at least a silver medal. She will now fight for the Asian Games gold on October 2.
For the boxer from Assam, however, the journey is not over.
One more fight. One more step.
And the Northeast will be watching.
