Shillong, Aug 15: A 61-member Meghalaya karate contingent returned with an impressive haul of 39 medals from the 20th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship 2026, held at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from August 7 to 9.
The state team, led by Arjun Sewa, Edwilbert K Nongkynrih, Pynhunlang Kharbuli and Sharai Nongneng Shanpru, competed against karatekas from across the country and secured nine gold, 11 silver and 19 bronze medals.
The performance marked a strong showing by the Meghalaya karatekas at the national-level championship, with the athletes representing the state with commitment and determination.

The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) has expressed its appreciation to the Meghalaya Government for extending financial support to the athletes under the Team Preparation programme for the 39th National Games 2026.
The Association congratulated all the medal winners as well as the 61 karatekas who participated in the championship, acknowledging their dedication and commitment in representing Meghalaya at the national event.
