Nagoya, Japan: India’s weightlifting drought at the Asian Games is finally over. Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu stormed onto the podium with a silver in the women’s 49kg category on Wednesday, ending a 28-year wait for an Indian weightlifting medal at the continental showpiece.
Chanu’s podium finish at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 marked India’s first Asian Games weightlifting medal since Karnam Malleswari claimed silver at the 1998 Bangkok Games.
The silver also completed Chanu’s collection of major international medals, adding an Asian Games podium finish to an already distinguished career.
Her achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian weightlifting, bringing the country back to the Asian Games podium after nearly three decades.
