Shillong, Aug 3: Sawmer SC and Rangdajied United FC will both be aiming to register their first win of the Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2026 season when they face each other in the opening fixture of Round 2 on Tuesday.
The match will kick off at 4pm at the SSA Stadium.
Both teams made encouraging starts despite failing to secure maximum points in their opening outings. Sawmer suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Langsning FC on July 25, while Rangdajied United were held to a 1-1 draw by Meghalaya Police FC three days later.
Last season, Rangdajied finished fifth in the standings, with Sawmer ending the campaign in sixth, and both sides showed signs that they could improve on those positions this year.
Rangdajied, seven-time runners-up and champions in 2013, have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season. Midfielder Dameki Khongstia is expected to play a key role after leading the side in the opening match, although he was forced off around the hour mark with an apparent injury. The arrival of former Shillong Lajong defender Henryford Nongneng has also added experience and stability to the backline.
Sawmer, meanwhile, impressed despite their defeat to Langsning. They remained organised defensively for much of the contest and looked dangerous on the counterattack through new signings Raikutshisha Buam and Banteilang Lyngdoh. The side conceded only in the 81st minute and will be confident of carrying that performance into Tuesday’s encounter.
With both teams still searching for their first victory of the campaign, Tuesday’s clash promises to be an evenly contested affair as the second round of the SPL gets underway.
