Shillong, Aug 1: Meghalaya athlete Pormeet Hajong has become the first person from the state to compete in a HYROX race, marking a significant milestone for Meghalaya’s growing fitness and endurance sports community.
Hailing from Billdoba in Mahendraganj, South West Garo Hills, Pormeet is the son of Bilal Hajong. His participation in the internationally recognised fitness competition places Meghalaya on the HYROX map for the first time.
HYROX is one of the world’s fastest-growing indoor fitness race formats, combining endurance running with functional strength challenges. Conducted under a standardised format across the globe, the competition allows athletes to compete under identical conditions regardless of the host country or city.

The race comprises eight one-kilometre runs, each followed by a functional workout station, testing an athlete’s endurance, strength, stamina and mental resilience.
The eight workout stations include a 1,000-metre SkiErg, 50-metre Sled Push, 50-metre Sled Pull, 80-metre Burpee Broad Jumps, 1,000-metre Row, 200-metre Farmer’s Carry, 100-metre Sandbag Lunges and 100 Wall Balls.
HYROX competitions are held in three categories – Singles (Open and Pro), Doubles and Relay. While Singles athletes complete the entire course individually, Doubles teams share the workout stations, and Relay teams of four split both the running and workout segments.

Pormeet’s debut is seen as a landmark achievement for Meghalaya’s emerging functional fitness community and is expected to encourage more athletes from the state to take up competitive endurance racing.
