Shillong, July 19: Meghalaya karatekas Daniel Dabiangbha Warjri and Gideon Tympuin brought laurels to India after winning gold and bronze medals respectively at the 10th Cadet, Junior, U-21 and Senior South Asian Karate Championship 2026, which concluded in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Sunday.
Representing India for the first time, Daniel clinched the gold medal in the Boys’ Junior Individual Kumite (-68kg) category, while Gideon secured the bronze medal in the Men’s U-21 Individual Kata event.
The achievement was announced by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA), which hailed the duo’s success as another significant milestone for karate in the state.
Daniel and Gideon earned their places in the Indian team through outstanding performances at the national championships earlier this year. Gideon won the gold medal at the 5th KIO Senior & U-21 National Karate Championship in New Delhi, while Daniel claimed silver in the Boys’ Junior Individual Kumite (-68kg) event at the 5th KIO Sub-Junior, Cadet & Junior National Karate Championship held in Dehradun.
Before their departure for Bangladesh, AMKA was confident that the duo would make both Meghalaya and India proud on the international stage.
Their performances continue Meghalaya’s impressive record at the South Asian Karate Championships. Last year, Kynjailin Lyngdoh Mawnai won a bronze medal in the Female U-21 Individual Kumite (-50kg) category at the championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Previously, Wandahunshisha Mawblei had won the gold medal in the Girls’ Cadet Individual Kumite (-54kg) category at the South Asian Karate Championship, also held in Dhaka, in 2019.
