Shillong, June 26: Few places in India embrace football quite like Meghalaya, and with the FIFA World Cup 2026 underway, the state government has announced a dedicated public viewing venue in Shillong. Named the Chief Minister’s Football Fan Park, the facility at the S.R.G.T. Parking Lot in Polo will be inaugurated on Friday, giving football fans an opportunity to experience the tournament together.
Announced by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, the initiative seeks to transform the FIFA World Cup into a community celebration while showcasing the state’s deep-rooted passion for football.
The fan park will feature live screenings of FIFA World Cup matches on a giant screen, offering supporters a vibrant public viewing experience. To cater to local audiences, screenings will be limited to fixtures scheduled at fan-friendly timings, with kick-offs at 9:30 pm, 10:30 pm and 12:30 am.
The month-long celebration will also include live performances under the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Program (CM-MGMP), blending football and music to create a festive atmosphere throughout the tournament.
According to the government, the initiative reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to promoting its growing football culture while providing fans with a unique space to come together and enjoy the world’s biggest football spectacle.
