Anangpara, Oct 20: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for a Rs. 8.57 cr Synthetic Football Ground at Anangpara Playground in South West Garo Hills (SWGH), taking forward the state government’s broader push to build a stronger grassroots sporting culture and establish Meghalaya as a major sporting destination.
The project is part of a wider plan to develop 58 artificial turf playgrounds across the state, with one in each Assembly constituency. Beyond improving playing facilities, the government intends to use the expanding network to create more opportunities for young athletes through grassroots competitions and talent identification programmes.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, Sangma said that once the turfs are completed, the government plans to organise tournaments for Under-10 and Under-17 to Under-20 age groups across the state’s 56 blocks. The competitions are intended to provide young players with opportunities to compete at the local level and help identify talent for district- and state-level tournaments.
The proposed synthetic turf at Anangpara is thus part of a larger vision in which improved infrastructure is expected to support participation, nurture sporting talent and strengthen the pathway from grassroots competition to higher levels of the game.
For Meghalaya, where football has a strong following, the challenge is to ensure that better facilities translate into regular playing opportunities and sustained development for young athletes. The proposed network of turfs, coupled with grassroots tournaments, is intended to bring organised competition closer to communities and widen access to sports infrastructure.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s increased focus on sports, stating that approximately Rs 2,000 crore had been invested in the sector over the past eight years. He said the Sports Department had been elevated to a major department, compared with its earlier status, when its annual budget ranged from Rs 50 crore to Rs 100 crore.
Sangma also highlighted the scale of development initiatives in South West Garo Hills, stating that projects worth approximately Rs 900 crore had been sanctioned for the district in recent years. These cover several sectors, including education, healthcare, road connectivity and sports infrastructure.
The programme was attended by MLAs Mehtab Chandee A. Sangma, Ian Botham K. Sangma and Sanjay A. Sangma, along with MDC Linekar K. Sangma. The Chief Minister also felicitated social worker Limbirth Ch. Marak for his service to society.
The Anangpara project represents another step in Meghalaya’s infrastructure-led sports development agenda. Its long-term significance, however, will depend on how effectively the facility is integrated into regular competitions, coaching programmes and opportunities for young players to progress through the state’s sporting system.
