Tura, May 23: The Grand Music School football team emerged champions of the Symon Soccer Tournament after defeating Makbil FC 4-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Chandmari Artificial Football Turf in Tura on Saturday. The thrilling finale drew loud celebrations as the Grand Music School side held their nerve from the spot to secure the title.

The tournament is organised annually by the Symon Soccer Tournament Committee in memory of late Symon A. Sangma, a talented footballer from Tura who had represented Meghalaya through St. Anthony’s School, Shillong, at the prestigious Subroto Cup in Delhi during his youth. The competition aims to honour his legacy while providing a platform for young footballers from the region to showcase their talent.

The closing ceremony was attended by Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma, retired DYSA official Jasper P. Marak and Roger Benny A. Sangma, who congratulated both teams for their spirited performances and distributed the prizes.

Several players were also recognised for their outstanding performances during the tournament. They are:
Best Goalkeeper – Gitchang M. Marak of the Grand Music School;
Highest Scorer – Chuara Ch. Marak of Makbil FC (11 goals);
Player of the Final – Brenian M. Sangma of the Grand Music School ;
Player of the Tournament – Breaker B. Marak of the Grand Music School.
