Guwahati: Assam’s Putul Sonowal on Friday became the first Indian to assure himself of a medal at the World Bowls Champion of Champions after storming into the men’s singles semifinals in Barham, New South Wales, Australia.
Sonowal produced an impressive performance to progress through the group stage and the quarterfinals, securing his place in the last four and guaranteeing himself a medal.
After winning five of his six matches in the opening round earlier in the week, Sonowal began Friday with a commanding 5-0 victory over Botswana’s Edwin Nyoka Jnr in his final Section 1 match. The win helped him top his group and advance to the quarterfinals.
The Assam bowler continued his winning run in the last-eight stage, defeating Singapore’s Harriman Yuen to book his semifinal berth.
Sonowal’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian bowls, with the Assam athlete becoming the country’s first medal assured at the prestigious international competition.
With a place in the semifinals secured, Sonowal will now look to extend his campaign and challenge for a place in the final.
