The Northeast has once again underlined its growing stature as a powerhouse of Indian sport, with its athletes delivering outstanding performances at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
From boxing and weightlifting to wushu and hockey, athletes from Assam, Manipur and Mizoram have brought glory to the country, showcasing the region’s remarkable contribution to India’s sporting success.
Leading the celebrations is Assam’s Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, whose golden triumph in boxing has added another memorable chapter to her distinguished career. Her success reflects the resilience and determination that have made her one of India’s leading names in international boxing.
Manipur’s Mirabai Chanu, one of India’s most celebrated weightlifters, has once again demonstrated her fighting spirit on the continental stage, adding to the region’s rich sporting legacy.
In wushu, Manipur’s Roshibina Devi continued to shine, reinforcing her reputation as one of India’s finest exponents of the discipline. Her medal-winning performance is another testament to the state’s consistent production of elite martial arts talent.
Hockey, too, has witnessed a significant contribution from the Northeast. Mizoram’s Lalthantluangi and Lauremsiami Hmarzote have been part of India’s golden campaign, highlighting the growing influence of northeastern players in the national women’s hockey setup.
Their achievements represent more than individual success. They reflect the determination, sacrifice and sporting culture that have helped the Northeast emerge as a vital contributor to India’s international sporting ambitions.
For a region that has consistently produced champions despite infrastructural challenges and limited resources, these performances are a source of immense pride. The success of its athletes also reinforces the need for greater investment in grassroots development, world-class training facilities and sustained institutional support.
As India celebrates its champions at Aichi-Nagoya, the Northeast’s contribution deserves special recognition. These athletes are not merely winning medals; they are inspiring a new generation to dream bigger and aim for the highest honours in sport.
The message is unmistakable: the Northeast is not just participating in India’s sporting journey—it is helping shape its future.
