Shillong: Shillong is gearing up for the Northeast Zonal Championships 2026, with the state set to host 284 shuttlers representing eight teams from September 16 to 19.
For Meghalaya badminton, however, the championships are about much more than hosting a major regional tournament. With the National Games coming to the state in 2027, the competition provides Meghalaya’s shuttlers with an important opportunity to test themselves against the best players from the Northeast and measure their preparedness ahead of the home National Games.
The four-day championships will feature both senior and Under-19 competitions, with qualification for major national tournaments at stake.
The senior men’s and women’s teams will be competing for qualification to the Senior National Badminton Championships in Bhubaneswar in November 2026. The tournament therefore offers Meghalaya’s senior players a crucial opportunity to earn national exposure and establish themselves ahead of the National Games.
The Under-19 boys’ and girls’ teams, meanwhile, will be fighting for qualification to the Inter-Zonal Championships in Gangtok in November 2026, giving Meghalaya’s emerging players another important pathway to national-level competition.
Speaking to Meghalaya Sports, Rajesh Kamal Rajput, Secretary of the Meghalaya Badminton Association, said hosting the Northeast Zonal Championships was significant for the state, particularly with Meghalaya preparing to host the National Games next year.
The championships will allow the Meghalaya association to assess its players in a competitive environment, identify areas that need improvement and provide the shuttlers with valuable match exposure against quality opposition from across the Northeast.
With the National Games less than a year away, the tournament also comes at an important time for Meghalaya’s sporting ecosystem. For the state’s badminton players, competing at home brings the advantage of familiar conditions and home support, but also the pressure of performing in front of their own supporters.
For the younger players, the Under-19 competition could prove equally important. Qualification for the Inter-Zonal Championships in Gangtok would give Meghalaya’s emerging shuttlers an opportunity to take their next step on the national pathway.
The presence of 284 players across eight teams is expected to make Shillong a hub of badminton activity over the four days, while giving the Meghalaya Badminton Association an opportunity to showcase the state’s growing badminton infrastructure and organisational capabilities ahead of the National Games.
With national qualification on the line and the 2027 National Games firmly on the horizon, the Northeast Zonal Championships could prove to be an important checkpoint for Meghalaya badminton.
