Nongpoh, Aug 4: Ri Bhoi district took a major step forward in sports infrastructure on Monday with the inauguration of its first artificial turf football ground at Umbuda village.
The facility was inaugurated by Cabinet Minister and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun in the presence of Nongpoh MLA Mayral Born Syiem, who attended the programme as the guest of honour.
Also present were Nongpoh MDC Rona Khymdeit, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini, Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, District Sports Officer Bobby Nongbet, local dignitaries and residents.
Constructed at a cost of Rs. 10.93 crore under the State Fund, the artificial turf is expected to provide footballers in the district with access to modern playing facilities and strengthen grassroots sports development.
A management committee comprising representatives from Mawroh and Umbuda villages will oversee the maintenance and operation of the ground, with the Deputy Commissioner serving as its chairman. The committee will be responsible for ensuring the facility is properly maintained and utilised to promote football and other sporting activities in the district.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sohtun described the project as a significant milestone for Ri Bhoi and said the artificial turf would provide young footballers with a quality venue to train and develop their skills.
He thanked everyone involved in the execution of the project and acknowledged the MDA-II Government for supporting the initiative, saying the investment reflected the government’s commitment to creating better sporting infrastructure for the youth.
The inaugural programme concluded with an exhibition football match between the MLA XI and the Officers XI, with the Officers XI registering a 3-1 victory.
