Shillong, July 27: Team Meghalaya delivered an impressive performance at the Amateur National MMA Championship, returning home with a total of seven medals, including one gold, two silver and four bronze, at the five-day competition held at the Abhay Prashal Stadium in Indore from July 22 to 26.
The state contingent, comprising athletes from Shillong and Tura in West Garo Hills, showcased grit, determination and discipline throughout the championship, competing against some of the country’s top mixed martial arts fighters.
Several Meghalaya fighters produced strong performances inside the cage, with many narrowly missing out on additional podium finishes. While some close contests did not go in their favour, the team viewed the experience as another important step in its development.
The championship also marked another milestone for the state as two officials, one from the Garo Hills and the other from Shillong, were selected to officiate at the national championship. Their appointment reflects the increasing recognition of Meghalaya’s officials on the national MMA stage.
The Meghalaya contingent expressed its gratitude to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for his continued support, which enabled the team to participate in the championship. The assistance helped cover essential expenses, including travel, accommodation, registration and other logistical requirements.
The team also acknowledged the efforts of its athletes, coaches, officials and supporters, whose collective commitment contributed to Meghalaya’s successful campaign. The contingent remains optimistic about building on this performance and achieving even greater success at future national championships.
