Shillong, Sept 27: Shillong College dominated the 13th Inter-College Karate Tournament organised by the All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA), winning five of the six individual and team titles at the one-day event held here on Saturday.
The tournament, held in collaboration with the Sports Development Cell of Shillong College and supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, brought together 30 karatekas from 11 institutions.
The championship also formed part of AMKA’s talent scouting programme for the 39th National Games 2027, which Meghalaya will host.
Shillong College’s Gideon Tympuin claimed both the men’s individual kata and men’s individual kumite titles. St Anthony’s College took the men’s team kumite crown through Aventinus George Mylliem, Damebanmerbha S Blah, Samebanmerbha S Blah, Ferdinand Samkupar Rani and Jasper D Pdang.
In the women’s events, Shillong College’s Rebeka Nongspung won gold in both individual kata and individual kumite. She also combined with Larisha Kurbah, Kynjailin L Mawnai, Daphilahun Meri Wahlang and Ibadaplin Mukhim to win the women’s team kumite title.
Shillong College were crowned team champions in both the men’s and women’s sections. St Anthony’s College finished runners-up in the men’s category, while Lady Keane College took the women’s runners-up position.
East Khasi Hills District Sports Officer and AMKA Vice-President Damang Syngkon, who is also a multiple national and international karate medallist, was the chief guest at the opening ceremony.
Syngkon noted that there is a dropoff in terms of numbers from AMKA’s inter-school to inter-college tournaments, with the former drawing in hundreds of karatekas every year. “We are trying to address this and the inter-college tournament and state senior team are getting stronger. This is due to the efforts of AMKA and the state government,” Syngkon said and he recognised new national champions that are coming up, such as Gideon Tympuin, who won a gold medal in a national tournament in New Delhi in February-March and a bronze in the South Asian Championship in July.
He also acknowledged Donboklang Lyngdoh, Technical Director of AMKA, who has attained the rank of 6th Dan black belt.
Dr (Mrs) H Diengdoh, Vice-Principal, Academy and Student Welfare, Shillong College, was the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
