Shillong, Sept 8: Footballer Sanfida Nongrum was conferred the ‘Achiever of the Month’ award in the Sports Edition by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma at a programme in Shillong on Tuesday, recognising her achievements and contribution to Indian football during the year.
Nongrum was among 46 outstanding sportspersons from various disciplines who were felicitated during the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said the ‘Achiever of the Month’ initiative was aimed at recognising individuals who have made notable contributions in different fields and encouraging their efforts through appreciation and support.
Highlighting the government’s focus on sports, the Chief Minister said the sector has received increased budgetary allocations in recent years, with investments being made in infrastructure as well as support for sports associations, coaches and individual athletes.
He recalled that sports associations in the state had previously carried out their activities largely through their own passion and commitment, with limited government support.
According to Sangma, several challenges in the sports sector have since been addressed and the government has sought to streamline support and create a stronger sporting ecosystem across the state.
“The Sports Policy of the state is not merely a policy document but a vision document that helps and guides us to move forward to achieve our goals,” he said.
The Chief Minister also described government spending on youth and sports as an investment in the future of Meghalaya.
“Every program we have, every single penny we spend is not an expenditure but an investment in the future of our state that is our youth,” Sangma said.
Congratulating the sportspersons, he said sporting achievement should not be measured only by medals and recognition, but also by the values and example athletes set for others.
“Sports is a way of life and your journey does not end here and I encourage you to lead by example,” he said.
Sangma also interacted with athletes, coaches and representatives during the programme, responding to queries and suggestions concerning support for athletes participating in national and international competitions, as well as incentives for medal-winning sportspersons.
