Shillong, Sept 7: The Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has appointed experienced coach H Standly “Stanley” Rozario as head coach of the state team ahead of the National Games 2027, which Meghalaya is set to host next year.
Rozario returns to the Meghalaya football setup with extensive coaching experience and a strong familiarity with the footballing landscape of the Northeast.
He previously guided Shillong Lajong FC during the club’s debut I-League campaign in the 2009-10 season. Under his leadership, the Shillong-based side also reached the final of the Federation Cup that season, finishing runners-up.
Following his stint with Shillong Lajong, Rozario went on to coach several clubs, including United Sikkim FC and Aizawl FC. He has also had spells with some of Indian football’s most prominent clubs, including East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Salgaocar.
An AFC Pro Licence holder, Rozario has additionally worked with the Indian Army and Services team. At the international level, he served as assistant coach of the Indian senior men’s team under then head coach Bob Houghton from 2006 to 2008.
The MFA said it was looking for a coach with experience, a proven record and the ability to work effectively with young players as it prepares for the National Games on home soil.

Following an extensive search, the association reached a mutual agreement with Rozario, who will now take charge of the Meghalaya team with the state’s preparations for the 2027 National Games getting underway.
The Meghalaya government has been encouraging state sports associations to make the most of the opportunity presented by hosting the National Games, with support being extended towards infrastructure, equipment, exposure trips and personnel.
With football among the state’s most popular sports, expectations will be high for the Meghalaya team to put up a strong showing at the Games.
Rozario’s appointment brings considerable experience to that challenge, while his previous association with football in Meghalaya adds another layer to his return to the state setup.
