Shillong, Aug 17: Meghalaya made a strong debut on the national triathlon stage, winning five medals at the National Age Group Triathlon Championship held at Balewadi Stadium in Pune on August 15 and 16.
Organised by the Indian Triathlon Federation, the championship brought together athletes from across the country who competed in swimming, cycling and running across different age categories.
Meghalaya fielded its first-ever national triathlon contingent comprising 12 athletes — five boys and seven girls. The team returned with three silver and two bronze medals, marking a significant achievement for the state.
Sumarbiang Mawlong, Dr Ardonister Lyngdoh and Glareenda Louiza Wahlang won silver medals, while Balasweidor Wahlang and Naphisabet Nongbet secured bronze medals.
Other members of the Meghalaya contingent included Ibankdup Nongbet, Denise Tariang, William K Sangma, David Issacson Wahlang, Willbornson Wahlang and James K Lyngdoh.
The achievement is particularly notable as the Meghalaya Triathlon Association was formed only in June 2026, making the Pune championship its first national-level competition.
“This is a proud and emotional moment for Meghalaya. Our athletes entered their first national competition with courage and determination, and they have returned as winners,” said Rephica Pde, President of the Meghalaya Triathlon Association.
She added that the performances demonstrated the sporting potential in Meghalaya and credited every athlete, coach, support staff, family member and well-wisher for contributing to the historic achievement.
