Shillong, Aug 9: St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School emerged champions in both the boys’ junior and men’s senior categories as the Border Security Force (BSF), Meghalaya Frontier, concluded the three-day district-level SPANDAN League-2026 Basketball Tournament at St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, on Sunday.
Organised under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) initiative as part of the BSF Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the tournament featured 30 teams from across Meghalaya competing in the boys’ junior and men’s senior categories.
The closing ceremony was attended by Inspector General of BSF Meghalaya Frontier Om Prakash Upadhyay as the chief guest. He was received by Deputy Inspector General Vivekanand Singh Rathore, Commandant Maneesh Negi of the 153 Battalion BSF, senior BSF officers and other dignitaries.
Addressing the participants, Upadhyay highlighted the importance of sports in shaping young people by fostering confidence, leadership, discipline, teamwork and determination. He encouraged the players to pursue excellence through hard work, regular practice and a strong spirit of sportsmanship.
In the boys’ junior category, hosts St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School clinched the championship, while Shillong College finished runners-up and Sacred Heart Boys secured third place.
St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School also dominated the men’s senior category, lifting the title ahead of St. Anthony’s College, with Shillong College finishing third.
The winning, runners-up and third-placed teams were felicitated during the closing ceremony.
In a press statement, BSF Meghalaya said the tournament provided young basketball players with a competitive platform to showcase their talent while promoting the values of discipline, teamwork and fair play.
It also emphasized that the successful completion of the tournament reflects the growing popularity of basketball among the youth of the state and reinforces its commitment to promoting sports and strengthening community engagement through initiatives such as the SPANDAN League.
