Shillong, July 8: When the final whistle blew after 102 pulsating minutes, Argentina had scripted one of the greatest comebacks of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
For 78 minutes, Lionel Messi and his teammates looked destined to join the growing list of football heavyweights heading for an early exit. But in a breathtaking four-minute spell inspired by their captain, Argentina turned despair into belief before completing a dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt to seal a place in the quarter-finals.
The Round of 16 clash had everything a World Cup classic demands – missed chances, controversial moments, relentless pressure, late drama and a stunning turnaround that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the very end.
The result came just a day after five-time champions Brazil suffered a shock elimination, while Portugal also bowed out, in what is possibly Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearance. Co-hosts Mexico were also knocked out by England, fuelling speculation that the tournament could produce a first-time champion.
For much of Tuesday night, Argentina appeared set to become the latest casualty.
Egypt stunned the South American giants by taking the lead in the 15th minute through Yasser Ibrahim, before Mostafa Zico doubled the advantage in the 67th minute to leave Argentina staring at elimination.
The Egyptians could have been even further ahead. Zico had another effort ruled out in the 58th minute after a foul was detected in the build-up, denying Egypt what would have been a commanding three-goal cushion.
Argentina’s frustration mounted when Messi failed to convert a penalty shortly after Egypt’s opening goal. Despite dominating possession and creating repeated opportunities, they were denied time and again by goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir, who produced a string of outstanding saves to keep the Albiceleste at bay.
With the clock ticking down, Argentina finally found a breakthrough.
In the 79th minute, Cristian Romero headed home from a superb Messi delivery to halve the deficit and ignite hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Four minutes later came the moment only Messi could produce.
Receiving the ball near the right corner of the penalty area with barely any room to manoeuvre and defenders closing in, the Argentine captain unleashed a powerful strike from an acute angle. Goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir got a hand to the ball, but could only deflect it onto the crossbar before it bounced into the net. The stunning finish levelled the score at 2-2 and marked Messi’s eighth goal of the tournament.
The equaliser shifted the momentum completely, but it also sparked tempers. Egypt accumulated five yellow cards during the closing stages, including head coach Hossam Hassan being booked on the sidelines. Goalkeeping coach Saafan Elsaghir was even sent off with a red card as tensions flared.
With both teams pushing for a winner, the decisive moment arrived in stoppage time.
In the 90+2 minute, Enzo Fernández headed home the winning goal, completing an extraordinary comeback that had seemed impossible just minutes earlier.
Egypt fought until the final whistle, but Argentina held firm through more than 12 minutes of added time to secure a memorable 3-2 victory and book their place in the last eight.
The Albiceleste will now face the winners of the Round of 16 clash between Colombia and Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
