Tura, May 14: The 4th P.A. Sangma Memorial Day & Night Cricket Tournament began on Wednesday at the Police Parade Ground in Tura, with 84 teams from across the Garo Hills region taking part in the popular annual competition. Organised by the P.A. Sangma Memorial Day & Night Cricket Committee, the tournament will run till May 25 and features 10-over matches aimed at delivering fast-paced and competitive cricket action.
The opening ceremony was attended by Rangsakona MLA Subir M. Marak, Selsella MLA Arbinstone Marak and GHADC Deputy CEM Stevie M. Marak. Addressing the gathering, Subir Marak emphasised the importance of discipline, accountability and time management in sports and everyday life. He also thanked Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for supporting sports development in the state, including preparations for the 2027 National Games and infrastructure projects such as the Mawkhanu Football Stadium in New Shillong.
The inaugural programme also featured an exhibition match between the invited dignitaries and members of the organising committee, with the guest team securing victory. Subir Marak was named Player of the Match. In the opening competitive fixture, South Tura NPYF defeated Durama Imbama by 83 runs, while Justwell M. Sangma was adjudged Man of the Match for his performance.
Though this year’s edition has slightly fewer teams because of time constraints, organisers said the tournament continues to witness growing popularity across the Garo Hills region. Last year’s tournament had recorded participation from 99 teams.
