Nongpoh, Aug 25: Players from the West Garo Hills District Badminton Association (WGHDBA) delivered an outstanding performance at the 40th Meghalaya State Badminton Championship held in Nongpoh from August 20 to 23.
The team returned home with a seven medals, including three gold and four silver, across different age categories.
In the Under-13 girls doubles, Amelia D Marak and Athena D Marak claimed the gold medal, while the pair of Samarah D Shira and Urvi Ghosh secured silver. Elmo Kaizo D Marak added to the tally with a gold in the Under-13 boys singles. The Under-15 boys singles also proved to be a strong category for West Garo Hills, with Sixbirth M Marak taking the gold and Dezio P Marak earning silver. Sixbirth further impressed by bagging a silver in the Under-17 boys singles, while the duo of Biswajit Ghosh and Gaurav Aditya Dutta won silver in the Under-19 boys doubles.
This year’s championship witnessed a massive participation of 314 players who registered 435 entries across 22 events.
A total of 409 matches were played on four courts over the four-day competition. However, it is noted that players from Mairang and East Jaintia Hills were absent from the tournament.
